The Future Is Orange

Orange is France Telecom’s global identity for their mobile network and internet service provider department. This was acquired from the Hutchinson Telecom mobile phone network based in the United Kingdom and was originally called “Wanadoo”. After it was incorporated back in 2005, the identity was rebranded in 2006. The brand is the fifth biggest and most successful telecommunications provider globally, having reached well over 193 million customers in 32 countries in 2009.

Company Beliefs

Continuously building their relationships with customers and being a trusted commercial entity is the main goal of the company. Providing high quality services, growth, innovation and efficiency are the key elements that the company aims to offer their clients. Being a service-oriented telecommunications operator, the motto “I am who I am because of everyone” drives their marketing strategies and is the core of their offered services. The company claims that their brand offers dynamic, friendly and honest service to their myriad of clients all over the globe.

Logo and Slogan

A brand consultancy based in London (and has branches in New York City and Dubai as well) called Wolff Olins designed the logo and established the brand values. The WCRS advertising agency lead the conceptualization of the company slogan, namely “The Future’s bright, the Future’s Orange”.

The idea behind the brand’s modern advertising lies in its simple components. It is square simply to differentiate the name from “orange” as a fruit. It needed to be globally competitive even with other internationally-known big brands such as Hertz and Visa. The color orange was used not only to imply name retention in a subconscious manner but also because it is a strong Feng Shui color.

Academic Partnerships

In order to provide the best service and to enable innovation across the board in their subsidiaries, France Telecom partners up with several research and development firms as well as top-ranking universities not only in France but around the world.

France Telecom’s academic institute and university partnerships follow framework guidelines and agreements. These include INRIA, Supélec, CNRS, Ecole Normale Supérieure and others.

Orange believes in keeping their research and development teams trained and highly specialized. From the nearly 300 PhD postdoctoral researchers as well as employed students, around one third is recruited on a permanent basis into the company’s research and development groups after their doctorates.

A new thesis chapter, formulated in partnership with the Bernard Grégory Association, has been established in order to ensure that the students adapt more easily into their professional career after completing their doctoral degrees. The Orange Labs located on three continents supports these programs and ensures their success.

The research groups keep a close contact with several top universities in the different stages of developmental analysis. These include the Concordia University in Quebec and the CRIM in Montreal for validation methods, network optimization is supported by the Geneva University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston (MIT) for virtual environments, multimedia distributed platforms is handled by the Lancaster University in the United Kingdom, the Columbia University in New York for intelligent agents,  among others.
