Question about ferret cages…?

I have a ferret and a cage for just over 48 hours. I have owned two in the past that have been taken by an ex-roomate and the other by an ex-girlfriend. Since this one is new (from a pet store about 4 months old) He is not litter-box trained and simply makes a mess with all of his food and toys. My cage is about 3 feet high and it is multi-tiered via ramps.. . . . . . I guess my question is, is there any pseudo-”feng shui” that would help him to get used to his cage better and make it easier for him to figure out his litter box?

ehhh… guess I couldn’t figure out exactly how I wanted to ask this, but this is the best I got. And I do know that you have to teach a ferret to use it, but I was hoping for an answer something like which levels to keep the food/water on, which level for the toys, which level for the litter box, for his bed.. . . Thanks for answering my rambling!

That is such a young ferret issue and easy to help. I always use the bottom layer as the toilet area and it seems to work the best. I line the bottom of the pan with paper and then I buy 3 cheap cat litter pans from Wal Mart that fit in the bottom layer nice and snug. The reason I do this is because it makes cleaning very easy because you can lift out the pans individually every day and clean, plus there is the added bonus of the snug fit which tends to keep them in their place. Some people just spread litter all over the bottom pan but that is too hard to clean daily. Some use one litter box and it works for them but my kids all share a cage and there is always somone who wants to redecorate the cage. To teach him to use the pan, just leave some poop in it so he can tell it is a toilet area and he should do the rest. If he messes any where else in the cage, clean it up immediately and look at your shelf layout to see that he can easily get to the toilet area. I don’t like using the ramps but if your guy uses them I would suggest no ramps from the bottom layer to the first layer but put the shelves so that he can get up easily. I use a shelf on both end sides for the first step (I also use a cat litter pan tied to the side of the cage and full of soft blankets) and place one shelf in the middle of the level that is a step higher so he cannot fall straight down to any shelf.(middle shelf does not have a bed but is left a shelf) I buy dryer vent tubing and the plastic tunnels that you can get at any pet store and plaace the tunnels in the next shelves where there is a hole for the food bowl. I use the tunnels to get them from shelf to shelf at about the middle shelf and up. I make a shelf all the way across (3 shelves) at about the middle of the cage and use this for the feeding station (I use a big ceramic bowl for food/water is by bottle but you can place a bowl for water here also) with a nice sleeping area at the other side of the cage. The nest layer has a shelf in the middle with hammocks and hanging sleep beds all over the place. At the top level, I spliced the top of another cage with tunnels and I made a platform type hammock that runs the whole top of the cage so they can get in the hammock and go up through the tunnels.

The main idea is to get the toilet area and food area seperated and easy for them to reach plus a section for sleeping which allows them to change dens during the day. I imagine that ferrets in the wild living down tunnels change sleeping areas frequently to ward off getting caught while napping. Mine are free roam during the day and only spend about 9 hours in their cage but every night they go through the cage searching every corner before they settle in a bed. Beds are changed frequently every night as they eat and use the toilet area.

Thats how my gang hangs and I attached a site with suggestions and pictures so you can see another view point. Patience is a huge virtue with weasels so keep working on it and he will get it. I have litter trained my whole gang and I add to it as rescues come in so they are using the boxes through out my home. The secret is to give them a toilet or three in every room and they will catch on very quickly Good Luck, wish you success quickly.
